  22. INCA SITES:

The Inca ruins are scattered around the Andean region. The major sites are in [M 004 / Cuzco], which was the center of the Inca Empire, and in the mountains around it. In Cuzco itself, the ruins of the Coricancha Temple of the Sun is now incorporated into a Dominican church. There are also several other Inca walls remaining in the city.

Along the Urubamba Valley there are several ruins - most notably Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Sacsayhuaman - where there are large fortresses. At Chinchero there are Inca terraces and rocks carved into seats and staircases. Further to the west lies the ruined City of Machu Picchu about 40 miles from Cuzco, high up in the beautiful peaks of the Andes. It is the site most visited by tourists. A [M 003 / trail] about 20 miles long leads from the railway track to the ruins, passing by other interesting Inca sites.

  28. ENTRANCE FEES:
  29. Most of the major sites demand an entrance fee. The cheapest way to see the ruins and the major buildings in Cuzco is to buy a visitor's ticket costing US$10. It allows you to visit the 14 major sites and some of the main buildings in Cuzco. You can buy it at the sites or from the tourist office.

Tickets bought at travel agencies are valid for five days, while those bought at the tourist office are valid for 10 days. For visiting Machu Picchu, an additional entry ticket costing US$10 must be bought. If you return to the ruins for a second day, you must pay an additional US$6. Round trip tickets costing around US$60 are available, including the return train journey plus a bus journey to the site, entry to the site and lunch at the Machu Picchu Hotel. If you want to visit the Machu Picchu ruins at night, a US$10 ticket is available, and must be bought during the day.
